SANDY HILL CEMETERY
HAWKESBURY, ONT.

THIS CEMETERY IS JUST WEST OF THE LEVAC MUNICIPAL PARK, WEST HAWKESBURY TOWNSHIP, CORNER OF SANDY HILL ROAD & FAUTEUX STREET, ABOUT A 1/4 TO 3/8TH OF A MILE WEST OF HIGHWAY 34, IN A GROVE OF TREES, IN THE NORTH WEST CORNER, OPPOSITE THE HOUSE OF GUY PERREAULT. [[ July 2,1992 a.w.f.]]

The stones are laying on a mound about 4 feet in height, about 30 or so feet in length and the stones are on a slope facing south east, in a north-east to south west direction. On this visit I copied 12 stones half of which are in 2 or more pieces. Also laying around are numerous pieces of markers with lettering on them and which could if all the pieces could be found make up probably, at least another 4 stones. The broken pieces could also be part of the stones copied, which are as follows and were copied from right to left.

1. Mary Griswold - wife of - Baxter B. Cobb - died Sept. 27. 1853 - aged 20 years.
   "And no con__ision may keep the soul's release
   The palsied lips a sheild of rapture ______ ."

2. Broken in 2 pieces vertically about 4 inches from the right edge.
   Sacred - to the memory of - Agness Sheilds - daughter of Samuel & - Matilda Sheilds. who - departed this life - 7th June 1855: - aged 10 months & 18 days.

3. Martha Carey - wife of - Robert Beggs - died July 31, 1889 - aged 59 yrs. Native of Belfast - Ireland.
   " No _____ Rifted Rock
   I'm resting. Sure and safe
   From all harm. "
   I could not turn over this stone to see if there was an inscription on bottom. [awf July 2.92]

4. Charles W. Bangs - died Apr. 15, 1904 - aged 61 years.

5. there are 2 pieces.
   The first has a diagonal break on the top right corner, the 2nd has its left side gone and the following is how the inscription reads. 1st piece reads
   Sacred
   to the memory _________
   Thomas Be_____________
   a native of ____________
   who departed __________
   on the 18th of M________
   aged 37 years.

   2nd piece reads

   ________ was erected
   ________ Magdaline Rae
   _______imony of her esteem
   _______ . and regret for
   ______ed as he had lived
   _____ne merits of our
   _______Redeemer.
   

6. No inscription on visible side of stone. I did not turn over stone to check back. This stone was broken as well.

7. Darwin Stevens - born at Petite Nation Mill - Canada Oct. 24, 1823 - Drowned - at Hawkesbury Mills - July 23. 1888.
   "The sweet remembrance of the
   Just, shall blossom when they
   Sleep in dust."
   Bates Co.

8. the words "Our Mother" in centre of a wreath.
   Charlotte M. Bangs - beloved wife of - John McLaughlin - died July 18, 1893 - ae. 46 yrs. 8 ms, & 20 ds.
   "_______ ______, yes _______ ________ ______
   ______ ______ ______ dearly, and _______ will
   ______ ______ ______ too, and thought it first
   to take her home, to Him at rest."

9. This stone is in 3 pieces. Top part reads.
   This stone - erected by Geo. Higginson - in memory of his wife Harriet - daughter of Samuel Stevens - of Hawkesbury who departed, rest missing

   2nd part reads & is upside down
   Darwin Stevens - drowned at Hawk'y Mill - July 23 1888 - ae 64 y'rs - Sylvester Stevens - died Oct 30 1868, ae 36 y'rs.

10. Top missing, 1st piece reads
    1867 ae ________
    Anna Whitec__________
    died Dec 31 1839 ae ________
    Elvira died May 2 - 1835, ae 10 months
    Margaret died July 5, - 1852. ae. 22 years.

    2nd piece reads
    on broken top edge, only bottom of line visible, then
    the 32 year of her age - also their son George who died Jan 5, 1854 - aged 5 years.

11. top missing, then
    aged 56 years
    Natives of Mass.

12. Top reads,
